Congratulations to the VUSC students who together with Western Edge Youth Arts proudly presented ‘LEAR’, an adaptation of ‘King Lear’ by Shakespeare.
The play was performed over two nights – 13th and 14th September – with shows commencing at 7.00pm.
The play was about a newly created utopian world; one which has been created for the sole purpose of peace, prosperity and equality. Teenagers who are desperately seeking to live in a society more just and tolerant than the ones they have grown up in run it. When Lear, the founder, decides it is time for her to step down as leader, she halves her empire between two new leaders and for the first time, the community is divided. Under new reign, Utopia is suddenly under threat.
Congratulations to the cast for their outstanding performances and to Mr Polizzi and Western Edge for their support, coaching and organisation of the production.
Below are some of the students’ experiences:
“At first I didn’t have the confidence to stand up in front of a big audience, but I thank the production for giving me the opportunity to overcome my shyness. It was very fun to get to know others. Everyone treated each other like family, and we were all very open with each other. I look forward to next year’s production!”

“The play was an amazing experience and a great way to connect with others. I not only got to build my confidence but also had the opportunity to work with an amazing, creative group of people that I have learnt to call my friends. Being in the play has made me feel a sense of belonging. I have no regrets and I would do it all over again.”

“The production made me the person I am today. I used to be so shy and introverted but after the play I talk to so many people and I’m so much more confident in myself. Meeting 20+ new people at first was so hard for me, but now, I’m not afraid to call them family. I love everyone in the production and they’ve earned a place in my heart. I’ve learnt to take new and exciting risks and to step out of my comfort zone. I love the production team for helping and guiding me to be who I am. I hope to do the production again!”

“ ‘Lear’ helped me meet people who I now call some of my closest friends. The whole experience in seeing this production grow into something incredible that we made and showed our family, friends and peers was incredible. I love the support given and received from all people. We helped each other through some of the tough times we faced. I would love to do this over and over again, and meet more amazing people. I am definitely doing this next year and hopefully meet even more people!”
